CVSA To Issue Guidance On LED Lights And Diode Failure Rates For Enhanced Road Safety

Sep 23, 2024

In a move to further bolster commercial vehicle road safety, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) is collaborating with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and various industry groups to develop guidelines on LED lighting and the acceptable failure rates of diodes. The aim is to establish clear standards on when the number of failed diodes poses a safety hazard, ensuring that all vehicles on the road maintain optimal illumination.

CVSA underscores that once these standards are scientifically validated and finalized, they will be promptly disseminated to the industry and enforcement agencies to strengthen compliance. Until then, inspections of LED lighting systems focus solely on their visibility from the legally mandated minimum distance, regardless of the exact number of functioning diodes. This approach ensures that as long as the lights are bright enough to be seen from the required distance, they are considered compliant.

However, from a liability and safety perspective, CVSA experts caution that even if some diodes are still operational, transportation companies should proactively replace faulty components. They emphasize that, particularly for rear-facing lights, failure to be visible to following drivers can lead to devastating underride collisions. Moreover, the cost of preemptively replacing lights pales in comparison to the potentially astronomical civil liabilities that may arise from accidents.

The experts stress that in court, a defense based solely on the fact that "a few diodes were still working" would likely fall flat. Consequently, they advise transportation enterprises to adopt a cautious approach and prioritize safety by addressing any potential lighting issues promptly.

In summary, while CVSA is poised to issue official guidance on LED lights and diode failure rates, companies are encouraged to adhere to current visibility standards and proactively maintain their vehicle lighting systems to contribute to a safer road environment.
